Definition
Academic and technical writing often requires you to define a word or
concept—both to show that you understand how to use it properly
and to help your reader understand the terms of your discussion. A definition
paragraph establishes the meaning of a term or concept, often
referring to its origin or the history of its use. A definition paragraph
is almost always positioned near the beginning of an essay to establish
from the outset the meaning of a term that is central to the writer's
subject. The following definition paragraph appears at the beginning of
the discussion section of the CMJ article from which it was taken:
While
chaos and complexity are different concepts, there is an important
link between the two underlying theories. Put succinctly, chaos
theory is the study of how simple systems can generate complicated
behaviour, while complexity theory is the study of how complicated
systems can generate simple behaviour. Familiarity with both concepts
is important to an understanding of warfare. This essay will first
look at chaos, to set the scene for the introduction of complexity
theory.
