Spellchecking

When using a word processor, you cannot rely on spell/grammar check to detect errors in your work with great accuracy. A computer can only recognize misspelled words, not typos that appear as other words. Common errors such as there for their or form in place of from will not be detected. You must always edit your writing carefully with your own eyes and ears. Further, many spellcheck programs are based on American spellings. If you type words such as neighbour, cheque, defence, or travellerestablished Canadian spellings for these wordsyour spellchecker will likely underline them in red. Stand up for the true north, strong and free: do not bow to the spellchecker in matters of established Canadian usage and preferred spelling. If you do use an American-made spellchecker, you will eventually need to load common Canadian spellings into the program.
