Interjections

Interjection

An Interjection is a word or phrase that expresses surprise or strong emotion, often followed by an exclamation point or by a comma when it appears at the beginning of a sentence.

Examples of Interjections

"Good God! Did we send men to fight in that?" (LtGen Kiggel, at Passchendaele)

In this example, both the word choice and the exclamation mark convey strong emotion.

Alas, there is significant confusion and division over the soft-hard power debate.

In this example, the interjection "Alas" conveys a feeling of regret.
