Getting Started: Introduction No two writers go about the business of thinking and writing in the same way. Some writers like to have everything plotted out before they begin to write; others appear to jump in and begin writing in order to discover what they have to say. Whether you compose an extensive outline or loosely arrange ideas and facts that you wish to write about, some form of prewriting or discovery of ideas precedes the writing process. The prewriting strategies discussed in this section present you with methods for getting ideas and for organizing research materials in preparation for a writing task. Even if you have already developed your own system, you may discover alternative prewriting methods that may prove more effective or more suitable than your current way of working on a writing assignment. Recalling the motto on the Ontario license plate, the usefulness and benefits of particular prewriting strategies are "Yours to discover." |
