| The Parts of Speech English words can be divided into eight groups or types, depending on how they are used in a sentence. These eight ways of using words are called parts of speech, and are given the following names:
Understanding the roles that parts of speech play will help you to construct more effective sentences, to punctuate them correctly, and to reduce errors. And these are matters that will be addressed in the forthcoming modules in this course. Spend some time reminding yourself of the basic parts of speech, their functions and families of words. Then, when someone refers to a preposition or coordinating conjunction, your eyes won't glaze over. |
